HortScholar shares growing media alternatives
During the Cultivate’17 trade show in Columbus, Ohio, the 2017 HortScholars delivered presentations to the many industry professionals gathered at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The HortScholars program is funded and sponsored by AmericanHort, with the goal of granting horticulture students access to networking and job opportunities while supporting their research. After the 2017 HortScholars presentation, Matt McClellan, managing editor of sister publication Nursery Management, chatted with Michigan State University undergrad Anthony Soster about his research into the feasibility of alternatives to peat in growing media.

It’s only fitting for Cultivate, the annual horticulture trade show hosted in Columbus, Ohio, to be jam-packed with knowledge. From management strategies and group discussions to new varieties and technology, there’s an abundance of inspiration to be had for retailers and growers alike. Several areas of the trade show were decorated with imaginative product displays, like the Proven Winners booth, which wholeheartedly embraced “Greenery,” the 2017 Pantone Color of the Year. Cultivate’17 offered ample photo opportunities like the one above, which garnered a substantial reaction from Garden Center Instagram followers.
