In our May issue, we examined several ways in which some garden center retailers have branched out into the food service industry by opening cafés and restaurants on their properties. Motivations and methods differ, but many businesses see the benefit in offering a dining experience in addition to their normal operations. At North Haven Gardens in Dallas, Texas, the garden center’s on-site café is only the beginning. The dining space complements the retailer’s art gallery and calendar full of classes and events.
North Haven Gardens opened its art gallery (bottom) in 2015, and its café (below) the year after, with the goal of enhancing the customer experience. There is a focus on healthy meal preparation at the North Haven Gardens café — with a menu based on salads, sandwiches and wraps instead of fried food.
